Mayo Retina is the solo practice of George L. Mayo, MD specializing in diseases of the macula, vitreous and retina. We have created a patient-friendly environment that makes medical care and eye surgery a low stress experience. We are equipped with the most modern technology and instrumentation in our area and we strive to blend this technology with a warm and sensitive touch in treating the ophthalmic needs of our patients.
Dr. Mayo graduated from Pomona College then went to University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine and interned at Baylor College of Medicine. He spent four years serving Marines and Sailors as a General Medical Officer in the US Navy where he was awarded several decorations, including the Navy Commendation Medal, the Navy Achievement Medal, the Expert Marksmanship Medal and the Fleet Marine Force Ribbon. Dr. Mayo attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander.
He went on to his three year Ophthalmology residency at the University of Texas Health Science Center San Antonio where he was twice awarded Resident of the Year. In addition, he was given the Mary Bass Boeker Award for Outstanding Achievement in Research and founded the Medical Student Ophthalmology Club. Moving once more to Pennsylvania, Dr. Mayo completed his two year fellowship in Vitreoretinal Surgery at the Scheie Eye Institute, University of Pennsylvania. While training, he also participated in Antibody-Targeted Photodynamic Therapy research. To date, Dr. Mayo has done over 40 articles, publications, scientific exhibits and oral presentations. A final move to California landed Dr. Mayo in Orange County where he started Mayo Retina in 2008 to pursue his dream of private practice.
