Neuralink's Blindsight Program

As a retina specialist, I’ve been closely following Neuralink’s development of Blindsight — their innovative visual prosthesis that uses a brain-computer interface (the N1 implant) to directly stimulate the visual cortex.  By bypassing damaged eyes or optic nerves entirely, patients wear camera-equipped glasses that capture the visual scene and wirelessly transmit processed data to the implant, creating the perception of vision.  On September 17, 2024, Neuralink received FDA Breakthrough Device Designation for Blindsight.  This designation accelerates the path forward for individuals with severe vision loss, including those blind from birth (provided the visual cortex remains intact).  Promising long-term results in non-human primates have already been reported, with human implants targeted for 2026.  While early versions will likely offer lower-resolution vision, the potential to restore functional sight is truly transformative.  If you or someone you know has significant vision impairment and may be interested in future clinical trials for visual prosthesis, I encourage you to join Neuralink’s Patient Registry (now open worldwide): https://portal.neuralink.com/  This could be life-changing for many patients.
